It may look ridiculous someone like me to write about the music business but it is just my point of view. I think that every young band or artist like me should have a good idea what is going on what is the path to bring the music to the people and to try to earn some money for it.
First of all I want to say something about the free music. Could music be really free? I don't think so. In fact most of the new bands and artists are giving their songs for free but very few people want to listen to them. The reason are the poor sound quality compared to the the expensive sound of the popular artists, not so good arrangements, not the best possible performance and the lack of advertising. The music production is very time consuming and expensive process. In fact it is impossible for one man to do all the work alone and to take no money for that. If the artist or the band member have to work something else to make theirs living, it kills their time and have a terrible results on their music. As I am working as a computer programmer I can see it by myself Confused That gives a big advantage to the rich labels and the idea for free music quickly disapears Wink

But wat is the path ??? The most important thing in that business is how the listeners are listening to their music. the devices that play the music and the technology change the industry. At the moment the most polpular devices are the mp3 players, DVD, mobile phones and computers. This picture makes it clear that more and more money will go from the CD market to the online distribution. The companies that produce the mp3 players and mobile phones will take a large part in this online market trying to keep the music business as an oligarchy.
In this situation the artists can try to distribute their music alone using the internet just like the big companies. This is relatively cheap and is a good chance for the bands and the independent labels to take a larger part in the game. Prince is a good example. He has one of the best internet pages selling everything Laughing Laughing This is his page: http://www.npgmusicclub.com/

Look and learn.
